Challenge 

Once harvested, crops are vulnerable to decay caused by environmental conditions, as well as damage during harvesting, transportation, or storage. The spot of decay can spread dramatically and it is crucial to notice this in time and prevent spread of rot and ultimately save the crop. However, the onset of the decay process can be determined by an increase in temperature within the stored crop pile or in a bulk of grain being stored. And this is where our IoT solution comes into play.

Solution

cropSave is a hardware and software suite, comprising a web monitoring app built on the Thingsboard CE IoT platform and LoRaWAN devices (thermal rods), which were developed by our team.

How it works

Multiple thermal rods are positioned throughout the stored crops, ensuring even distribution across the entire area. Each thermal rod is composed of several 1-meter-long pieces, equipped with temperature sensors, allowing temperature monitoring at various depths within the stored crops. Whenever the temperature in a specific area increases more rapidly than the ambient temperature, an alarm is promptly displayed in the app. The trend in temperature inside the storage and outside from the weather station or from the non-immersed part of the thermal rod can be tracked on a graph.

The thermal rod is water- and dust-resistant, flexible, and resistant to mechanical influences. It is an autonomous device powered by a durable Li-SoCl2 battery. It includes a GPS sensor for precise location tracking within the storage facility, an accelerometer for theft protection, and a LoRaWAN module for transmitting data to the cloud monitoring solution via a LoRaWAN gateway. 

To build our solution, we utilized the LoRaWAN WisBlock modules, sensors, and gateways provided by RAKwireless. The LoRaWAN standard offers low power consumption and extensive coverage.

Client: 

BaseCon is a pharmacovigilance software company from Denmark. Established in 1999, BaseCon has become the go-to pharmacovigilance solutions provider that is easy-to-use and also enables streamlined drug safety practices in accordance with regulatory requirements. The company’s solutions enable pharmaceutical companies and contract research and safety organizations to achieve compliance. 

Project goal:

BaseCon needed to integrate the their smart pharmacovigilance platform with Viedoc, an EDC system for pre-certificate clinical trials. So they reached out to WaveAccess to develop an integration solution to coordinate Basecon and VieDoc data fields and allow users to easily and efficiently retrieve all the data they needed.

Solution: 

WaveAccess developed the integration module that coordinates BaseCon and VieDoc data fields and created a mapping editor. We also created a user-friendly interface for the screens they made and conducted part of the testing validation. The key tech challenge was to create a flexible editor of mapping and connection details, and WaveAccess produced the responsible, trusted outcome of a successful product.

WaveAccess contributed to the development of the MyPlasticDiary web application MVP. This platform enables users to monitor and manage their plastic consumption, locate nearby recycling points, and ultimately reduce their plastic footprint.

Our team enhanced the application with the capability to recognize plastic packaging through images and label text. This functionality utilizes advanced computer vision algorithms and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to accurately identify the type and weight of the plastic.

In a pilot phase, we focused on milk packaging recognition and developed a user interface demo. The system was initially trained using images and product descriptions from the dairy section of Sainsbury's online store, a major British retailer. The model's capabilities include distinguishing between plastic and tetra pack materials, identifying the specific type of plastic, and measuring the weight of both the bottle and the cap separately.

To prepare the machine learning model, developers collected various milk packages, documented their weight and material composition, and included this data in the training set. The system has been trained to recognize a wide range of dairy products available at Sainsbury.

Additionally, the application provides users with information based on their zip code about local recycling options for different types of plastics and the availability of appropriate recycling bins.
